Mission Statement of
Metis Settlements Strategic
Training Initiatives Society
“To provide training and education to Metis residing on Settlements and/or on an
authorized leave of absence; to assist them in entering, re-entering or retaining
active and meaningful employment within the Canadian labour Force” – MSSTI
Priscilla Auger works as the Human Resources Officer for Education and
Strategic Training Initiatives (STI) for the Settlement. This department addresses
many elements including Post Secondary Education, Trades, and Partnerships
with Alberta Works for Safety/Training Certificates.
Post Secondary
Buffalo Lake STI works with accredited post-secondary institutions throughout the province of Alberta and Canada wide to get our members registered as well as to bring the institutions into our community for Career Fairs. Our most utilized local institution is Portage College in Lac La Biche, and sub college in the nearby Town of Boyle. Through Portage College’s partnership with NAIT, local students are enabled to take their third and fourth year Business Administration Program. Students are also able to take online courses through Athabasca University located in Athabasca. Accessing the local institutions allows Settlement members access to many great educational programming they may not otherwise be able to access.
Safety/Training
As well as developing and undertaking some on-settlement training programs, we also provide Settlement members with easier access to funding for safety tickets and/or certificates thanks to the ongoing partnership (1999) with Alberta Works.
